LEAVELL, Charles Ophelia Hughes  -

LEAVELL, Charles Ophelia Hughes
LEAVELL, Charles Ophelia Hughes Leavell, at age 91, passed away quietly on Wednesday, October 4, 2017 surrounded by loved ones. She ended her long-term illness with grace and dignity. Charles was born in Flushing, Ohio on January 21, 1926, the daughter of the late Charles and Annie (Ligon) Hughes. She graduated from Flushing High School in 1944. She and her husband, Cecil Leavell, moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1957, where she worked for the VA Hospital. In the early 1980's, Charles earned her Associate of Arts Degree from Phoenix College in Nutrition. She later worked in the food service industry as a dietitian for Phoenix General Hospital and Phoenix School District 1, and retired from both. Charles and Cecil both obeyed the gospel, and were added to the Body under the ministry of Bro. Cottry Moore. Charles became a member of the Church of Christ at 1101 W. Tonto Street, and remained faithful until her death. She volunteered as one of the youth leaders for many years; she could be counted to help in the kitchen whenever it was needed; she was committed and a dependable worker for the many activities and events of the church. Charles enjoyed the sports: football, basketball and baseball. She enjoyed learning new hobbies, from sewing to macramé to crossword puzzles. She had a determined spirit and was not ever known to have an “idle” mind. She cared for her brother Grady until his death. She really loved being around family and friends. Charles was preceded in death by her parents, and her siblings, Robert (Ruth Ann) Hughes, Ruth (Lucien) Campbell, and Grady Hughes. Charles leaves to cherish her precious memories: her brother: Fred Hughes of Los Angeles, California; her sisters: Julia Jones of Dayton, Ohio, Hannah Houston of Denver, Colorado, Ruth "Patsy" McKinney, and sister-in-law, Mary (Grady) Hughes of Phoenix, Arizona; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and dear friends, especially the Tonto St. Church of Christ. We miss her dearly… she will always be fondly remembered. Funeral services will be 11 A.M., Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at Residence Park Church of Christ, 4328 Hoover Avenue. The family will receive friends 10-11 A.M. Interment West Memory Gardens.
