William Hendrix transitioned to his new life peacefully at his home on Wednesday, February 28, 2024. He was blessed to live 90 years! He was born on April 25, 1933 in Cottondale, Alabama, and grew up in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He was the last survivor of his 12 siblings. William was a part of the northern migration and relocated to St. Louis, Missouri in the late 1950s. After the death of his wife Susie he relocated to Dayton, Ohio where he lived for nearly 60 years.
William worked in the industrial manufacturing industry for most of his working life. He was employed by GH&R Foundry and Durion Foundry for over 30 years. He was always resourceful, and created multiple streams of income to ensure the security of his family. Mr. Hendrix was a man who successfully navigated the vicissitudes of life, against all odds!
He believed very strongly in God, and was a dedicated member of three congregations in Dayton: Canaan Missionary Baptist Church, Phillips Temple CME Church, and People’s Community CME Church. He sang bass in the choir and worked on the Trustee Board. When he was well, and sometimes not so well, he was usually at church every Sunday.
William was an avid gardener and fisherman. He was an excellent cook. He loved to watch golf on television, and he loved to discuss politics. A man of many talents.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Lois Hendrix, children Wanda Lane, William Earl (Vanessa), Gaylin Hendrix, and stepson Steven Joyner. Loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. In the nearly 60 years of being a Daytonian he amassed countless friends, most who have preceded him in death. But there are a few friends who remain special and loyal: Mr. Holiday, Greg McNair, and Cynthia Moore. A special gratefulness to the entire staff of Crossroads Hospice Care. He will be truly missed by those of us who truly loved him. And we are forever thankful for all the memories.
