She was born on January 28, 1932 in Delaware, Ohio to the late Thomas L. and Mildred (Heathcock) Mitchell. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Thomas, Donald, Robert and Virgil; her sister Linda Crockrell and brother-in-law Charles “Sandy” Crockrell. Doris joined Second Baptist Church of Delaware, Ohio at a young age.  She taught Sunday School and was superintendent of the Sunday School.  She graduated from Frank B. Willis High School in 1950. In 1953 she married Willie Fowler of Mansfield, Ohio. Out of their union two sons were born, Michael and Marc.  She moved to Dayton, Ohio in 1959. She joined Mt.
