Carrie Jackson Rivers was born June 9, 1919 in Clemson, South Carolina to Walter Odell Jackson and Lucille Patterson Jackson. She departed this earthly life on Thursday, October 24, 2024 at the glorious age of 105, after a brief illness.
At the age of 17, Carrie left South Carolina to explore and be all she could be. After spending a few years in Connecticut and New York, she moved to Dayton, Ohio where her sisters, Loretta and Vera lived. She met and wed Samuel J. Rivers. In 1949 the couple bought their home, they were only the second black family to integrate the community. A longtime member of the historic Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. She spent many years working Private Family Care for a local physician. A diligent and hard working lady, she achieved many of her goals. She enjoyed working in her yard, cultivating flowers, decorating her home for the holidays, and collecting knick-knacks.
She was smart, savvy, wise and always willing to offer a kind word and concern for her fellowman.
She was preceded in death by her parents Walter and Lucille Jackson, husband, Samuel J. Rivers, siblings Loretta Moore, Vera Mitchell, Mittie Jenkins, Dorothy Brown, Inez Cannon, Sylvene Hairston, Odell Jackson, Willie A. Jackson, L.C. Jackson, Grady H. Jackson and her longtime companion Rome Drummond.
She leaves to cherish memories her last remaining sibling Sylvester (Ella Jane) Jackson of Clemson, South Carolina, many loving nieces and nephews, her Bethel Missionary Baptist Church Family, a close-knit group of neighbors in the Edgemont community and a circle of caring, concerned friends.
