Charles Thompson Obituary

Charles Arnold Thompson, known affectionately as Jim, Chuck, Uncle Chuck, and Commander, joined our Heavenly Father, peacefully April 14, 2025. Born on March 23, 1934, in Watonga, Oklahoma, he was the beloved son of the late Charlie and Elmira (Dixon) Thompson. A proud graduate of Langston University and an esteemed member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

With over 33 years of dedicated service to the Department of the Air Force, Charles retired as Chief Master Sergeant. His commitment to duty was evident in both his active and reserve roles, as well as his work at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.  He was well known as a man of few words with deep pockets,  his generosity was endless, often parting with his last dollar to help those in need (really anyone).

While Charles did not have children of his own, he wholeheartedly embraced his role as “Uncle Chuck”, making each of his nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews feel extra loved and special.  He found immense joy in family gatherings, providing an abundance of junk food and cherishing the laughter of children. The memories made while riding on his mower, playing in the creek, bike riding in the cul-de-sac, unlimited soda and his legendary grilling skills were hallmarks of those gatherings. His home was a warm and inviting space that fostered family connection and love among all who entered.

Charles made a lasting impact on the Wilberforce community, serving as the Commander of the American Legion Post 95 for over a decade. His legacy includes his instrumental role in securing the historical landmark designation for the Colonel Charles Young Home, honoring the African Americans who served in our armed forces.

He is reunited with his beloved wife of fifty-five years, Linda Deen Harper Thompson, as well as his sisters Cora Hall and Vera Terrell, and brother Robert (Tosha-deceased) Thompson. He also mourned the loss of his niece Joyce Lister, JoAnn Uku and Anita Evans, along with sisters-in-law Earlean J. Blackwell , Carolyn P. Evans and Nina Harper, and brothers-in-law David Terrell, Robert Lister, Otis Haley, George Harper Jr., Hugh W. Evans, and John A. Blackwell I.

Charles is survived by his sister, Gloria (Ike) Brown Jr., along with numerous nieces and nephews who held him in deep affection. From his side of the family, he is survived by nieces Pamela Haley, Sharon (Mike) Carter, Teresa Brown, and Cynthia Brown, as well as nephews Sherman (Dorothea) Brown, Norris Thompson, Jarrod Thompson, and Jason (Elizabeth) Thompson. From his wife’s side, he is survived by nieces Julie (Willis) Daniel, Hope (Lamar Sr.) Embry, Yvette Evans, John (Miriam) Blackwell and Rachel Harper, among many other great nieces and nephews who will carry his memory forward.

As we remember Charles, let us honor his legacy of love, kindness, generosity, and service to others. Though he may be gone, his impact on our lives and the lives of countless others will remain forever in our hearts.
