Chrystaline also known to her friends and family as “Una” was born on July 16th 1937 in Georgetown, Guyana. She was the only child of Sylvanis and Esther Fowler–Joe. Her parents were from humble beginnings, but they were rich in ways that cannot be measured by material possessions. She inherited a rich legacy of faith, family, character, sophistication, and compassion. She was a strict disciplinarian, yet fun loving, and kind.
Una attended Smith’s Church Congressional School, and later Tutorial High School. In 1956 she met and fell madly in love with a local Police Officer, Viscount Sherwood-Saul (aka Harry). They were later married at St. George’s Cathedral on February 1st ,1958; and remained happily married until his death in 2015. That union produced five children.
To help create a full life of opportunities and dreams for their children, Una and Harry later migrated to the United States; they lived in Vailsburg, New Jersey, and after retirement moved to Florida. Her grandson, Mycal, relocated from Washington DC to Palm Bay Florida to assist in caring for grandparents, Harry & Una. He cared for them both until Harry’s death in 2015 and continued to care for Una until her relocation to Ohio to live with her daughter, Holis, and son-in-law Thomas, up until her death. Una’s life was her family. Today as those children, and their children celebrate her life, ingrained forever in their memories are images of a mother and grandmother who was caring, generous, and staunchly devoted to them, and God.
Una was a devoted Christian who accepted Christ at an early age. She attended St. Phillips Church where her life and character aligned with the teachings and values of Christianity. On any given day you could find her reading her Bible, Daily Word, and Unity books. Una truly embodied the adage of a life well lived. She had a zest for life that was infectious, and a spirit that was unconquerable. She found joy in the simplest things, and in doing so, taught us to appreciate those little moments that make life so beautiful. She often shared that she was not afraid to die, and reminded us that death is only one of the phases we must all pass through on our journey to eternal life.
The life of Una was, in so many ways, exceptional, she was the very essence of compassion and was remarkably loyal. Her heart was warm and welcoming, it was a place where everyone felt loved and accepted. She enjoyed her Guyanese cuisine, especially pastries, white/black pudding, roti and curry, and cook–up rice.
Una’s friendships encompassed all aspects of her life, and each was special to her. She was known not only for enjoying her friendships, but for being a good friend as well. She along with her friends formed a group they named “The Sunshine Girls” which included her good friends (Lynette, Ona, Aileen, Millicent, Audrey and Barbara) They travelled together, share informal and formal meals and entertaining, assisted in the community, and they saw each other through sadness and difficult times. Una recognized that friendships, like gardens, take work to maintain, and she was willing to go above what is expected.
