Mother Cumerdis Looney was born on November 20, 1933, in Homer, Louisiana, and peacefully transitioned from this life on May 13, 2026. Her life was a beautiful testament of unwavering faith, love, and dedication to both her family and her church.
She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Frank & Irene Nelms; her sons, Floyd & Craig Holt; her daughters, Barbara Oglesby & Sandra Holt; and her sisters, Mary Nelms, Lorene Waters Houston, Gussie Glenn, Inell Wheeler, Maddie B. Amos, and her twin sisters, Margie L.Boyce and Margie R. Norton.
Mother Looney attended Roosevelt High School and later became a licensed cosmetologist, using her skills to bless others not only with beauty but with encouragement and wisdom. In the 1940’s her mother took her and her sisters to a powerful and anointed service led by Elder Robert King. It was at this service that she accepted Christ and her spiritual foundation was firmly established.
One of her most cherished childhood memories was sitting around the fireplace with her parents and sisters, roasting peanuts and sweet potatoes, moments filled with warmth, love, and togetherness that she carried throughout her life.
For the past eight years, Mother Looney faithfully served as President of the Mother’s Board at Mt. Olivet COGIC. She was a pillar in both her local church and the state, known for her fervent prayers, steadfast faith, and wise counsel. A true prayer warrior, she believed in the power of prayer and lived a life that reflected her deep relationship with God.
Mother Looney never met a stranger. Her home was a place of comfort, love, and nourishment. She loved to cook and was known as an excellent cook. If you visited her, you would never leave without a full stomach and a full heart. Her hospitality was second to none.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who instilled discipline, strength, and values into her family. Though she was a strict disciplinarian, it was always rooted in love and a desire to see her family walk in righteousness and purpose.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories her sons, Riley Cooper, Terry Holt (Donna), and Darryl Holt (Ramona); along with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, extended family, church family, and dear friends whose lives were deeply touched by her love, strength, and unwavering faith.
Mother Cumerdis Looney’s legacy will live on through every prayer she prayed, every life she touched, and every seed of faith she planted.
