Herbert B. Fields Jr. "Buddy"

Herbert B. Fields Jr., affectionately known as "Buddy," and lovingly called "Pops" by his children and "ParPar" by his grandchildren, of Pickerington, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly on June 14, 2026, at the age of 75. Although his passing came far sooner than anyone expected, the impact of his life will continue to be felt for generations to come. Herbert was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, Marine, retired Senior Paramedic, and friend whose life was defined by service, strength, and unconditional love.

For 56 years, Herbert shared a loving and devoted marriage with his beloved wife, Pamela D. Fields. Together, they built a family, raised their children, and established a foundation that continues through their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Fifty-six years of marriage stands as a testament to their commitment to one another and to the life they built together.

In addition to his wife, Herbert leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Tawanna Fields-Mphande (Mangi Mphande), and son, Sean Fields (Shawntay Fields). He was a proud grandfather to Derrick Fields (Lauren Fields), Nia Tarrance, Imani Fields, Sean Fields (Tairya Fields), Makel Fields, Jaaron Fields (Mara Fields), Jai'Sun Alexander (Amira Alexander), U'Raiyah Alexander, Rayn Fields, and Maya Fields. He was also the proud great-grandfather of thirteen great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immeasurable joy.

He is also survived by his sister, Stephanie Butler; his dear cousin, Lewis Williams, whose lifelong bond and friendship meant so much to him; nephews Anthony Butler (Chauncey Butler), Duane Butler (Angela Butler), and Shelley Butler; and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, relatives, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert B. Fields Sr. and Esther Fields, and his brothers, Donald Fields and Mark Fields.

After graduating from Roth High School, Herbert proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. He later dedicated countless years to serving the citizens of Dayton, Ohio, as a Senior Paramedic with the Dayton Fire Department. Through compassion, courage, and professionalism, he answered the call to help others, touching countless lives and earning the respect of his colleagues and the community he faithfully served.

A hardworking man and devoted provider, Herbert was the strength and foundation of his family. His steadfast presence, wisdom, and unwavering love provided comfort and stability to generations. He led by example, quietly demonstrating what it meant to work hard, care deeply, and always show up for the people who mattered most.

Those who knew Herbert knew he was a creature of habit. You could almost set your watch by him. Sunday mornings often began with the newspaper, a quiet routine that became a familiar memory for his family. Sunday afternoons were frequently spent with his mother, enjoying the meal she lovingly prepared each week. These simple traditions, repeated over the years, became some of the moments his family cherishes most.

Herbert enjoyed life's simple pleasures and treasured time spent with family. He loved grilling and looked forward to holidays, family gatherings, and any opportunity to bring everyone together. Summers were especially memorable, filled with cookouts where family gathered to laugh, eat, and enjoy one another's company. A devoted Pittsburgh Steelers fan, he proudly flew his Steelers flag through every season, remaining loyal to his team no matter the outcome. Whether gathered around the grill, watching football, or simply spending time together, Herbert was happiest when surrounded by family.

Above all, Herbert loved his family. He will be remembered for his strength, his generosity, and the countless ways he cared for others. Having spent a lifetime answering the call to serve others, Herbert's greatest legacy will always be the example he set and the family he helped build. We will honor his life by carrying forward the values he lived every day—strength, integrity, commitment, and love for family. Together, we will continue to support one another, face life's challenges with courage, and remember him with gratitude for the life he lived and the example he left behind.
