Mr. Joe R. Sanders, affectionately known as: Uncle Joye, Grandpa Joe, Mr. Joe, The Youngest Cast Member of Fourteen Sanders Brothers and Sisters, passed away peacefully, Friday, February 6, 2026. He was born September 14, 1934, to the late Joe Robert Sr. and Deggie Moore Sanders in McCalla, Alabama.
Mr. Joe, as he was known, was a hardworking, passionate person, who gave his all to his family and friends. He never hesitated to help anyone in need.
Joe's history is amazing. Born in Alabama, he joined the Air Force in July 1952 as a Basic Airman, and was honorably discharged in February 1956, after receiving a National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. Upon leaving the military, he moved to New York, where he met Annie Ruth Cowan, whereby, a union was made in June 1957, whereas three children were blessed to the union. In New York, Joe and his brother, Leon, operated a T.V. Repair Shop, whereas, they purchased a Pool Hall, complete with grill, and a repair shop in the back. While working at the company Olivetti, he pursued his degree in electronics and computer science at New York City College, all while taking care of his immediate family.
Tired of the hustle and bustle of the big city, Joe decided to bring his family, west, finally settling in Dayton, Ohio. He used his military experience to receive a civilian job at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in July 1979, where he worked as a computer programmer for 30 years until his retirement. But he was not done. As the ultimate handyman, Joe worked as a plumbing and electrical consultant at Lowe's for over 16 years. Known as "Mr. Joe" he would say, "If I can read it - I can fix it!" We all have memories of Joe repairing, replacing or advising us of something in our homes.
His love for horse racing was unparalleled. Everyone knew his love for the thoroughbreds and his unbelievable luck. And know this: If he won at the track, everybody got paid!!
Joe is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Annie Ruth (Cowan), his siblings, grandson, Anthony Prego Jr., son-in-law, Robert Rivers.
Joe leaves to cherish his memories Joe Michael Sanders (Marie), Beverly Rivers, Gwendolyn Cooper (Garry); grandchildren, Brittany, Michael Prego Jr. (Nicole), Brian Prego, Shamel Rivers (Kate), Keshawn Rivers; 7 great grandchildren, Christopher, Sidney, Zahra, London, Madison, Miles, Shannon and a host of other nieces and nephews.
