John Mitchell Obituary

John aka Jack Henry Mitchell was born December 25, 1937, in Thomasville, Georgia to the late John Wesley and Irene Mitchell.  John took flight to rest in the arms of the Father on Thursday, January 12, 2022.  He was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters: Willie Mae, Lucille, Buddy, Mary, Rosco, James, Ezkiel and Lorraine.

John was raised in the church by his parents and accepted Christ at an early age.  He relocated to Dayton, Ohio in the mid 1960’s and was an employee of Chrysler for 39 years, retiring in 2003.

If you knew anything about “Jack”, you knew his passion was golfing!  He began playing golf in the 1950’s before golf carts were used, starting as a caddy the country club of his hometown.  Jack taught himself to play with a member’s old left-handed golf club.

Through his love of the game, he won over 100 golf tournaments, club championships, matches, and pro-am events while volunteering and mentoring young golfers throughout Ohio and the United States.  He was one of the “Best in the Midwest”!  He was a gem with an encouraging spirit that shined as a bright light on the game of golf as early on he had to fight to play because of the color of his skin.

Of his many accomplishments, Jack received a proclamation from the Mayor of the City of Dayton, proclaiming June 10, 2016, as “John Mitchell Day” for the many contributions he gave to the game.

John leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife Cynthia M. Mitchell.  Also, left to honor his memory are his three daughters, Tonette Anthony, LaDawn Hickman and ShaNay Norvell, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  John also leaves a host of special nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
