Johnnie M. Scott Obituary

To God be the glory for the things He has done:

Johnnie M. Scott, age 81 was born on April 8, 1943 in Tuskegee, Alabama to the late Lorene Scott Greene.

He professed his faith in God at an early age and joined Simmons Chapel Church in Tuskegee, Alabama. Johnnie was a member of Canaan Missionary Baptist in Dayton, Ohio

Johnnie’s family and childhood friends affectionately called him “Billy Joe”. He was educated in the Macon County School district and was a member of the Tuskegee High School class of 1962. After high school, he enlisted in the Army where he served until, he was honorably discharged. Upon returning home to Tuskegee, Alabama he met and married Tuskegee University student Patricia (Pat) Bailey. To this union Felicia Scott Payne was born.

Seeking better employment opportunities, Johnnie moved north to Dayton, Ohio. He initially secured employment at Gem Packing, a subsidiary of Liberal Markets. Johnnie, never one to settle, was always looking for the best way to provide for his family so when he heard about openings at General Motors he submitted his application. He would go diligently every day, on his lunch break, to inquire about the status of his application. Johnnie’s persistence paid off and he was hired by General Motors in January 1969 where he was employed until his retirement in September 2006.

Johnnie was a devoted husband, father, PaPa and friend. Providing and protecting his family was his heart’s passion.  He did this right up to the end by masking his pain so that his family would not worry about him. Johnnie’s only concern after receiving his diagnosis was how this would affect his family. At that point he told them “I am not worried about myself I have been blessed to have lived a pretty good life for over 80 years, which is beyond God’s promised years, it’s y’all that I worry about, I just want y’all to be ok”.

He would sow wisdom into younger people that he encountered always wanting the best for his people. You could also rely on Johnnie to provide comedic relief especially if there was a crowd present.  He did not take the meaning of friendship lightly so if he considered you a friend you had a true friend for life.

He was a dog lover, great hunter, an avid sports fan, boxing and basketball, in particular. Johnnie would engage in a debate about sports whenever the opportunity presented itself. He was very opinionated about who he thought was the best in the game. While Muhammad Ali, Kareem Abdul Jabar and Kobe Bryant were among his favorites it has been concluded that who he thought was the best could very well change depending on who he was debating.

On Saturday June 8, 2024, after courageously battling cancer Johnnie departed this earth at home surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother Lorene Scott Greene, Mama/Aunt Eva Mae Howard, siblings Emma Simmons, Beaster and Beora Hart and Geneva Harris

Johnnie leaves to cherish his memory: faithful and devoted wife Patricia Scott; daughters Kathy(Terry) Rainey, Tuscaloosa, AL, Felicia(J.C.) Payne, Dayton, OH; grandchildren, Ashley, Edwin and Teri Rainey, Tuscaloosa, Al, Jordan and Morgan Payne, Dayton, OH; great-grandchildren, Jamil and Ashlynn; brother-in-law Robert Bernard(Irene) Bailey; special nephews and nieces Frederick(Monica) Hart, Kevin(Christy) Harris, Yvette(Curtis) Hoskins, Cynthia Simpson Bryd, Shanta and Tina Harris, Reginald Fort, Edith Johnson and Rita McGahee; extraordinarily loving godchildren Danita(Norris) Billins, Kevin and Raleita Furlow, and Ralphdel Nolan-Elms; cousin Harvey Scott, Jr.; special friends Allen (Jack) and Melody Huguely, Robert Jackson, Carolyn Stewart, Patricia Brewer, Randall Byrd and children, the Payne family, Dillard Ricks, his childhood friends from Tuskegee, AL and a host of other relatives and friends.
