L. Christine Brown Obituary

L. Christine Brown began her journey in this life on November 6, 1938, in Athens, AL to Rev. Tom Staton and Mary (Harris) Staton. She is preceded in death by her father, mother, brother James Staton, sister Bertha Mae Cavitt and nephew Michael Staton.

Her family moved from Alabama to Nashville, Tennessee, when she was at a very young age.  One of her fondest stories is when they first moved to Nashville and she heard the train whistle, scared she took off running fast across the train's tracks and her dad had to catch her.  Christine affectionally called Chris by those closest to her was a graduate of Tennessee State University where she earned her B.S. degree in Biology.

After starting her family, she moved to Dayton, OH and later earned a master’s degree in Science from Wright State University. Chris had a 40-year career teaching Science in Dayton Public Schools.  “Ms. Brown” as her students would call was known for no non-sense approach to teaching and was loved by her students.  She was fierce with a ruler yet known for helping those children that needed it most.  One of her many accomplishments included organizing her students and cleaning an area in Northwest Dayton that would be turned into Wesleyan Park. Not only was she an educator, but she was also a nature enthusiastic, “a.k.a. Back to Nature Brown,” and loved spending time outdoors. One of her proudest personal achievements was climbing the Great Smokey Mountains. She was also known for having a strong faith, meditating, helping others, and being a spiritual guide. She opened her home to those without a home and if she had it to give, she gave it.

Departing this life on Tuesday, May 17, 2022, Chris leaves to cherish her memory her loving family including daughter Kim A. Brown, son Gary Del-Vecie (Karen) Brown (Indian Land, SC), daughter Ellen (Eric) Dudley; grandchildren Lea Dewberry, Christopher Mbah, Del-Vecie  (Mirle) Brown, Thomas Brown, Emmanuel Dudley;  great-grandchildren Kierre (Alana), Damir, Dashia, and Kaliyah Dewberry, Aria Frison, Aiden and Draya Goodloe, great-great-grandchildren Kara and Ares Dewberry; nephews Eldrige Cavitt and Kashma D. Staton; nieces Jan (Kevin) George, Gloria (Kim) Clay and Karen Cavitt; cousins Thomas Bell, Gerald Bell, and Marcella Bertrand; special friends Dr. Janice Coates, Evelynn Thomas, and Sylvia Ervin; and a host of other great-nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
