Obituary

Lillie M. Curry a beloved daughter, wife, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, and dear friend passed away on January 6, 2023.  Preceded in death by her late mother Ora Bell Jackson, late husband, Daniel (Danny) P. Curry of nearly 36 years of marriage and late brother Percy Marshall, Sr.  She leaves to cherish her memories, a loving brother Roosevelt (Lillie) Marshall, Compton, California, Rosa Nell Evans (daughter of Lillie’s first husband the late Andrew Evans Sr.), Birmingham, Alabama and her three birth children, Jackie Evans, Dayton, Ohio, Valerie (Keith) Peterson, Gaithersburg, Maryland, and Andrew (Denise) Evans, Dayton, Ohio.  She also leaves eight beautiful grandchildren Lamont Evans, Latoya Evans, Brandon Peterson, Jarvis Peterson, Jalisa Evans, Nicole Peterson, Brittany Evans, and Andrew Evans, III who loved her deeply, 12 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other devoted relatives and friends.

Her life’s journey began in Lowndes County, Alabama where she was born on April 16, 1940. She was raised by her mother and several other family members.  She fell in love at an early age and married Andrew Evans, Sr on March 19, 1958.  As part of the Great Migration from the south, they moved to Cleveland, Ohio, back to Birmingham, Alabama and later to Los Angeles, California with four kids in tow.  When the marriage to Andrew ended, she moved to Dayton, Ohio where she resided for the remainder of her life.

She attended Sinclair Community College for a brief period and secured a job as a Nurse’s assistant with Miami Valley Hospital. She learned how to drive and bought her first car.  On February 8, 1977, she purchased her first home, moving her three kids out of the impoverished inner-city to Jefferson Township to provide them with a better life.  She found a “new love” in Danny.

Her home was filled with warmth and love which was evident by the hospitality she showed to each person that walked through her doors.  It was also evident by the many photos she hung throughout her house.  A special 3x3 photo frame situated in her living room showcased the high school graduation photo of all her grandkids.  She loved her grandkids, and they loved her in return.

On January 31, 1987, she and Danny were married in her home.  She Joined Eastern Stars and lived a fulfilled life.  She made the best fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, green beans and sweet potato pies which were the family favorites.  She was ever-present at weddings, graduations, holiday gatherings, and more.  She was always willing to help others and she did so with an infectious smile.  Because she loved, she was loved in return.

She never forgot where she came from and always journeyed, with her brother Roosevelt, from Alabama to Cleveland to participate in the bi-annual Caffey Family Reunion or other family gatherings.  She loved her family, and they loved her in return.

During the last nine months of her life on earth, her three kids (along with occasional support from other family members) provided 24x7 care.  She passed away peacefully on January 6, 2023.  She loved her kids, and they loved her in return.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
