Marvin Griffin Obituary

Marvin Griffin, age 86, was born on March 11, 1937, in Troy, Alabama to Joseph and Bennie Griffin.  He was the third child of six.  The family moved to Hamilton, Ohio when Marvin was 5 years old. Marvin attended Hamilton city schools and graduated from Hamilton High School in 1956 where he was a dual athlete playing basketball and baseball.  While in high school, Marvin would meet the love of his life, Joyce (Ferguson) at Second Baptist Church in Hamilton, Ohio where her uncle, Rev. Emmeaus Fitten had come to preach.  Marvin and Joyce married on June 7, 1958, and were the parents of three children: Wayne, Sr., Angela, and Johanna.

Marvin joined the Air Force in 1957.  Serving for 25 years as an aircraft maintenance technician, Marvin and his family were stationed at various locations around the world and in the US.  Marvin retired at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in 1975 but was unable to sit still so rejoined the Air Force as a civilian employee and worked another 15 years as an HVAC technician. Still uncomfortable with retirement, Marvin joined the Dayton Metro Parks where he worked for 12 years enjoying his time in the various parks.  Marvin finally officially retired at the age of 72.  In his early years Marvin was an avid handball player and swimmer and enjoyed fishing on the weekends with his friends.  In later years Marvin spent his time at the American Legion Post 613 where he was a long-standing and dedicated member and officer.  He was also a member of College Hill Presbyterian Church in Dayton, Ohio.

Marvin enjoyed watching football and sports with his friends and family and was a diehard Bengals fan.  He enjoyed vacations with family and friends and cherished his father and daughter trips.  He was known for being a quiet, but strong force amongst his family and friends and could always be counted on.

Marvin passed away peacefully at home on Nov. 20.  Those left to remember his love and legacy are his daughters Angela Griffin and Johanna (David) Rocker, his brother Joseph (Louise) Griffin, Jr., his grandchildren Wayne (Megan) Griffin, Jr., Tehya Jones, Chanda Jones and David Rocker, Jr.  He will also be missed by his long-time companion Gail Puller, and his best friend Wendall Jones. His in-laws, Arthur (Terri) Ferguson, Kathy (Jim) Garrison, Pam (Woodrow) Quisenberry, Patty McClendon, Gregg (Becky) Ferguson, and Melissa (Albert) Wilkerson.  As well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Marvin is preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Joyce Griffin, his son Wayne Griffin, Sr., his parents Joseph and Bennie Griffin, and his siblings Donald Griffin, Vivian Jefferson, Joeldean Griffin, and Jeffrey Griffin.  The family finds solace knowing he is rejoicing with them in heaven.
