Melanie Francis Obituary

Melanie Hall Francis, age 82, of Dayton, Ohio, passed away on December 11, 2025.

Melanie lived a life shaped by faith, family, learning, and love. A lifelong member of St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, her faith was a steady foundation throughout her life and guided the compassion and care she showed to others.

She devoted 30 years to education, spending most of her career with the Dayton Public School system. Teaching was more than a profession—it was her calling. In her later years, she served as a math curriculum specialist, where she generously shared her knowledge and supported fellow educators with patience and encouragement.

Melanie graduated from Jefferson Township School in 1961 and attended Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, where she met her husband, James Francis. She earned her undergraduate degree in Education from Ohio University in 1965 and later received her graduate degree in Education from the University of Dayton in 1982, reflecting her lifelong commitment to learning.

She was a lifetime member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and a charter member of the Ohio University chapter, Delta Phi (1965). Her sorority sisterhood was deeply meaningful to her, and she remained active with the Beta Eta Omega Chapter until her health no longer allowed her participation.

Melanie had a lifelong love of dance, rooted in history and community. As a young girl, she was part of the original dance class started by Josephine Schwarz at the Linden Center, created through the efforts of Black mothers who wanted their daughters to learn ballet. That class later evolved into Jeraldyn Blunden’s School of Dance and the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company. She proudly passed this love of dance on to her daughter, Renee, who danced with DCDC 2 for several years.

Family was at the center of Melanie’s life. She cherished traveling with family, a love first encouraged by her parents and continued throughout her life. After their passing, she took special trips with her children and sister, creating lasting memories rooted in togetherness and love.

Melanie was deeply proud of her children and her grandson, whom she loved dearly. Her love was steady, thoughtful, and enduring.

She is survived by her daughter, Renee Francis Martindale; her grandson, DeAuco Francis; her sister, Georgene Price (Homer); and many beloved cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Lennie (Sue) Hall; her husband of nearly 60 years, James Francis; and her son, Darryl Francis.

A Homegoing Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5301 Free Pike, Dayton, Ohio 45426.

Melanie Hall Francis will be remembered for her faith, her dedication to education, her love of family, and the quiet grace with which she lived her life.
