Sylvia A. Coatney Obituary

A Virtuous Woman

Sylvia Ann Coatney

Sylvia Ann Dent was born to the late Bradley Dent Sr. and Seleicka (Turner) Dent on October 7, 1935. She was called home to be with the Lord on April 5, 2024.  To welcome her home were her parents; brothers Bradley Jr., Byron, Victor, Richard, Glenn, Dale, and Lynn; and sisters Stacey, Marie (Henderson), Izetta Thomas, Lillian White, and Glenna Hennison. Sylvia is survived by husband, daughters, brother William (Neadeane) Dent.

In 1940 at 5 years old, Sylvia joined the Wesleyan Church in Hillsboro, Ohio where she was an active member.  On June 9, 1957, Sylvia united in marriage with Samuel Coatney from the First Wesleyan Methodist Church in Dayton, Ohio.  From their union, they had three daughters Anitria, Yolanda, and Ladonia.

Sylvia was affectionately called Nan by her grandchildren Markus (Danielle) Hearn, Tieran Bonner, Jacquia, Breyonia, and Jalen Hearn.  She was blessed to meet both of her great-grandchildren, Jaeden and Navah Hearn.

Sylvia’s demeanor was always one of service to her family, job, church, and community.  She started as a Nurse’s Aide at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, and later on was encouraged to pursue her Licensed Practical Nurse degree for the hospital.  Sylvia always made people feel at ease and would minister about her faith to any and everyone.  She was a Teacher’s Aide in   Jefferson Township school system. Other titles she carried were Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, Missionary, and Senior Choir member.  Sylvia also would participate at other worship centers, such as Faith Ministries Church in Columbus, Ohio in order to help spread the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Sylvia was a terrific grandmother as she would attend and watch her grandchildren participate in award ceremonies, dance, theatre, track, basketball, soccer, and musical events, where she would continue to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ.

In later years she battled with age related illnesses, but always was praising God for His mercy and His grace.  On Friday, April 5, 2024, Sylvia answered her roll call from her Savior and traded her earthly home for her heavenly home.

She was known as Honey, Mom, Sister, Nan, and now as our guardian Angel.  We miss your presence, but we are grateful that your spirit will always be with us!
