Thomas King, affectionately known as Son, T. Cakes, and Boots, was born on June 12, 1940, in Ripley, Tennessee, to the late Kelly King Sr. and Mary King. As a young, gifted athlete with aspirations of playing professional baseball, it was clear from his earliest years that he possessed a rare determination and spirit that would guide him throughout his life. His natural drive, compassion, and unwavering devotion to his family became the hallmarks of the man he grew to be. On November 29th, 2025, heaven welcomed home a true provider, protector, and patriarch whose love shaped generations.
Thomas King and the King family moved to Dayton, OH, on January 1st, 1961, to start anew. Tom quickly jumped into gear securing a job as a transporter at Miami Valley Hospital to help take care of his younger siblings. Not long after moving to Dayton, Tom acquired a job at Delco Moraine, from which he retired after thirty-five dedicated years of hard work, a testament to the strength and perseverance that defined his life as a provider and comforter. He had a subtle but keen sense of humor, was a master chef when it came to making his famous popcorn and insisted he could sing as smooth as the O’Jays if you just listened closely. Tom was a man of many passions, and although he was a good country boy, he had an open mind and was not afraid to partake in new adventures. He loved to fish, farm, hunt, garden, gamble, and all things Cincinnati Reds. Nothing lit him up more than hitting the jackpot, whether it was at the horse races, the casino or the poker table. Regardless of where he was or what he did, he was always cool, calm and collected!
To be in Tom’s presence was to be embraced, supported, and admired. He was the loving father of three children: David Starks with Lynn Starks; and JaBarr Lasley-King and Shani (Andre) Lasley-Dortch with Shirley Lasley. He was also a proud grandfather to Taylor Starks, Tyler Fisher, and his pride and joy, Landen Thomáz Dortch.
His heart was his family, he was a brother to all, especially his cousins that he loved dearly. He embodied what it meant to be a father and father figure, providing not only for his children and grandchildren, but also stepping in as a rock for siblings, nieces, nephews and anyone in need of his nurturing touch. Tom could do it all…and he did it with a certain je ne sais quoi that made him distinctive and memorable.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Kelly King Sr. and Mary King; his brothers Kelly King Jr., Neal King, James King, and Billy King; and his sister Peggy Kindell.
He leaves behind his children and grandchildren to carry on his legacy. Cherishing his memory, long-time companion, Shirley Lasley, brothers William King and Ronnie (Mary) King; sisters Mary Barbee, Barbara Jean Roberts, Delois Jones, Patricia (James) Love, and Cathy (James) Clarett; as well as a host of adoring nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends who will forever feel his absence.
Tom King was truly a King among men—steadfast, generous, funny, and full of heart. His legacy of strength, compassion, and chivalry will live on in all who loved him.
