Mr. Walter Byrd Sr., 86 years of age passed away at home on Monday, August 23, 2021. Walter, son of the late Tino “Sugarman” Byrd and Jinni Tyree was born on October 24, 1934 in Eutaw, Alabama. He attended grade schools in Green County, Alabama and was a graduate of the Industrial High School in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Shortly after graduation from high school he relocated to Dayton, Ohio. At the age of 17, he met the love of his life Florine Byrd and they were united in holy matrimony for 67 years. Their union was blessed with two sons Walter Byrd Jr., and Willie Byrd.
At an early age he professed his faith in Jesus Christ and joined Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church where he and his wife were both dedicated members for over 50 years. At Mt Olive, he served faithfully as a member of the choir and was known to actively help out with the food pantry.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife (Florine Byrd), son (Willie Byrd), and brother Earl D. “Big Byrd” Byrd. Walter started his work career early on spending over 40 years at General Motors (Frigidaire) until his retirement. Walter was a loving and devoted husband who enjoyed spending time with family, traveling, shopping, attending church and bowling.
He leaves to cherish his memory his son Walter (Vickie) Byrd Jr., sisters Annie Lee Smalls and Janie Smith, grandsons Emmanuel Peyton and Walter Clark, five great grandchildren, as well as host of other loving cousins, family members, friends, neighbors and church family.
Walter will be deeply missed by all.
